The Technician Shortage Is Costing Equipment Dealers Revenue. Technology Can Help.

Equipment dealers don’t need another reminder that good technicians are hard to find.

New research from the Associated Equipment Distributors Foundation (AEDF) and Canada Equipment Dealers Foundation (CEDF) puts a number on just how much that shortage can cost.

According to the 2026 Technician Shortage Report, Canadian agriculture and construction equipment dealers face an annual shortfall of approximately 1,263 technicians, contributing to an estimated CA$803 million in lost shop and parts revenue each year.

  • 78% of surveyed dealers say the technician shortage prevents them from keeping pace with customer demand, while
  • 62% say it has hindered business growth.
  • The study estimates the industry will need to fill 26,500 equipment technician positions in Canada over the next decade.

Those numbers are specific to the Canadian market, but they underscore a challenge equipment dealers across the industry know well:

When technician capacity is limited, every technician hour becomes more valuable.

You May Not Be Able to Hire Faster. You Can Reduce Wasted Technician Time.

Recruiting, training, and retaining more technicians remains critical to addressing the industry’s workforce shortage.

But dealerships can also look at what happens after a technician walks through the door.

How much of that technician’s day is spent diagnosing and repairing equipment? And how much gets consumed by administrative work, finding information, navigating disconnected systems, or stopping to type service documentation?

Technology cannot create another technician.

It can help dealerships make better use of the technicians they already have.

That means giving technicians fast access to their work orders and service history, connecting service and parts workflows, supporting mobile work, and removing unnecessary administrative steps from the repair process.

And importantly, those tools have to be easy enough that technicians will actually use them.

At four-location Bobcat dealer White’s Tractor, technicians adopted Flyntlok faster than management expected.

“The technicians took to it quicker than anybody else. They like the visibility and being able to look at their own performance numbers.”
— Drew Marsteller, Operations Manager, White’s Tractor

Flyntlok gives White’s technicians access to their work orders and performance information from a phone or tablet while connecting service with parts and the rest of the dealership.

At RJ’s, owner Bob Jennings tells a similar story. He estimates that new employees can understand enough of Flyntlok to navigate work orders and complete basic tasks within about a week. One recently hired part-time technician picked up the system’s repair-order and scanning workflows much faster than Bob expected.

“Flyntlok is the least friction point that we deal with,.”
— Bob Jennings, Owner, RJ's

When skilled labor is already scarce, software shouldn’t become another source of friction.

AI Can Give Technicians More Time Back

Service documentation is a good example.

Technicians need to capture what the customer reported, what caused the problem, and what they did to correct it. Good documentation matters for customer communication, service history, warranty reimbursement, and future repairs.

But every minute a technician spends stopping to type detailed notes is a minute that technician isn’t working on equipment.

That’s why Flyntlok built Smart Tech Notes.

Instead of typing out a complete service story, a technician can simply talk through the repair. Flyntlok transcribes the explanation and uses AI to organize it into structured Complaint, Cause, and Correction documentation for the technician to review and apply.

The workflow is available on desktop and mobile and is designed to fit into the work technicians are already doing, not create another application or process they need to learn.

For SANY dealer TraxPlus, that has implications beyond convenience. Director of Operations Cody Savell sees stronger technician write-ups helping the dealership save time while protecting warranty reimbursement.

“That will eventually save us time and money. We’re not losing because the write-up wasn’t done right.”
Cody Savell, Director of Operations, TraxPlus

The Goal Isn’t More Technology. It’s More Productive Technician Time.

The equipment industry’s technician shortage will not be solved by software alone.

Dealers still need to recruit new people, develop technical talent, and create careers that keep skilled technicians in the industry.

But while dealerships work to grow that workforce, they also have an opportunity to ask a simpler question:

Are we making the best possible use of every technician hour we already have?

A modern dealer management system should help technicians spend less time fighting software, searching for information, and completing administrative work—and more time doing the skilled work customers are waiting for.

Because when technician capacity is one of the biggest constraints on dealership growth, giving technicians even a little more of their day back can matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dealership software solve the equipment technician shortage?

No. Recruiting, training, and retaining technicians are essential to addressing the workforce shortage. Dealership technology can, however, improve technician productivity by reducing administrative work, simplifying workflows, connecting information, and helping technicians spend more of their time servicing equipment.

How can a DMS improve technician productivity?

A modern equipment dealer management system can give technicians mobile access to work orders, connect parts and service workflows, make service history easier to find, simplify documentation, and reduce duplicate or manual processes.

What are Flyntlok Smart Tech Notes?

Smart Tech Notes is Flyntlok’s AI-powered service documentation tool. Technicians can speak naturally about the work they completed, and Flyntlok turns those spoken notes into organized Complaint, Cause, and Correction documentation for review.
