A 60-year-old dealership on green screens
When Sean McLaughlin bought Craig Taylor Equipment, the 60-year-old dealership was running on a green-screen IBM system with just two email addresses in the entire company.
“There was no visibility. We couldn’t see what was selling, what was rented, what was serviced. It was like flying blind,” Sean says.
The business was stagnant. Customer expectations had eroded over time, and the dealership, like many construction equipment dealers, had fallen into what Sean calls “the tyranny of low expectations.” Outdated systems made it nearly impossible to deliver the speed, transparency, and experience modern buyers expect.
Build or buy?
As an experienced tech entrepreneur, Sean set out to find a modern dealer management system (DMS) to replace the legacy system. After months of demos, he came to a startling conclusion.
“Every DMS I evaluated lacked the modern technology, usability, and reliability I expected. I couldn’t justify the time or investment, so I decided to build my own.”
He brought in another developer, and within six months, they had the first version of Flyntlok up and running inside the dealership. It immediately brought visibility into parts, rentals, service, and sales. Manufacturer reps visiting the store started asking, “What software are you using?”
Dealers across the country started calling.
A CRM built for how equipment dealers sell
Flyntlok is a cloud-based dealer management system built to modernize the four pillars of daily dealership operations: parts, service, sales, and rentals.
Most legacy DMS platforms offer no CRM, or rely on clunky third-party bolt-ons. Flyntlok includes a fully embedded CRM, purpose-built for how equipment dealers sell. From tracking inbound leads to generating fast, accurate quotes and managing follow-ups, it is part of the day-to-day workflow.
“Traditional systems ignore the top of the funnel. Flyntlok includes an embedded CRM that tracks every lead, quote, and follow-up, so nothing falls through the cracks.”
Why accounting stayed in Sage Intacct
Then came a critical decision: don’t build accounting into the platform.
Instead of forcing Flyntlok to manage financials, Sean chose to partner with Sage Intacct, a best-in-class cloud accounting system and the right complement to Flyntlok for construction and heavy equipment dealerships. The integration, co-developed with Sockeye (since acquired by Baker Tilly), connects daily dealership operations to enterprise-grade financial management.
“Why build a weaker version of something that already exists? We wanted best-in-class accounting, not a DMS bolt-on,” Sean says.
Flyntlok handles operations. Sage Intacct handles accounting. Each system does what it does best, and the dealership can track performance by branch, equipment, brand, or salesperson. Sage Intacct also takes the manual reconciliation work typical of legacy systems off the accounting team, so they can focus on strategy, not spreadsheets.
A system people want to work on
Flyntlok was designed inside a dealership, not in a boardroom, and it shows in who wants to use it. Young talent won’t work on green screens. A cloud-native system, with no servers, no clunky updates and real-time access from anywhere, helps the dealership hire and keep great people.
Customers notice too. SMS updates, online quoting, and transparent service communications are built in.
The live demo is his own dealership
When prospects want to understand what Flyntlok can do, Sean doesn’t show a prebuilt demo. He logs into his live dealership system and shows real-time quoting, rentals, parts, service activity, and financial reporting, live from a $110M operation.
Craig Taylor Equipment and Peterbilt of Alaska are proof that modern systems drive real results. And other dealers don’t need to build their own platform to get there.
